What Is Reiki

What is Reiki, you may ask? Well, in short, Reiki is a Japanese style of spiritual healing also used for stress relief and general relaxation. It is also a technique that helps to promote healing either for your own use and benefits or for the benefits and well-being of other people. It is identified and characterised as a practice of the “laying of hands”.

The powerful healing attributes of the techniques and methods used are based on the notion that there is an unseen “life force energy” that flows through each and every person. It is the recognition of this life force that is said to be the reason why people are actually alive. On the occasions when an individual’s life force energy is low, they are likely to begin to feel sick or feel weak. On the other hand, when the life force is high, people tend to feel healthy and happy.

Reiki does not only provide healing powers, it is also a form of meditation used as a kind of therapy for treating emotional, physical, and mental illnesses. The name of Reiki itself is derived from two Japanese words that describe the term energy itself. The word “rei”, which means “unseen” or “spiritual” and “ki” which means “energy” or “life force” are combined to become the one word of Reiki. Translated into English, its meaning is usually given as “universal life energy”.

As far back as the 20th century, Mikao Usui was known to have developed Reiki. The story has it that Usui was blessed with the ability of healing after enduring three weeks of fasting and meditating on top of Mount Kurama. Modern day practitioners of Reiki also use a technique similar to that of the laying on of hands.

This “laying on of hands” action is said to promote the channeling of “healing energy” onto another person. The energy is said to flow through the palms of the hands and brings along with it healing powers that can be used for self-treatment as well as for treating others.

Reiki is not complicated. It is, in fact, a simple, natural and safe way of distributing spiritual healing, well-being and self-improvement. Reiki is also known to be effective in providing alternative treatment for virtually any known illness and sickness. Whether used on its own or combined with other therapeutic or medical methods, whether or not some more traditional than others, Reiki is also said to work well in helping to relieve side effects and aid the recovery process.

As well as being simple in its powerful healing capabilities, Reiki is also very simple to learn. That being so, Reiki and the ability to use it effectively and efficiently cannot be taught by using the more traditional teaching methods. The skills and techniques are said to be “transferred” to the student during a Reiki class.

This transference of ability is not merely learned in the same way as you can learn certain things from a text book or blackboard. It is in fact passed on by a Reiki master to the student during a get together better known as “attunement”. Once the skill has been passed on, the student is then allowed to tap into an unlimited supply of “life force energy” that can then be used to improve not only their own health and quality of life, but also for the overall enhancement of others.

It may surprise some to know that although the practice of Reiki may be spiritual in nature, it is not considered as a religion. There are no particular set of religious beliefs that one should learn about before learning how to practice Reiki techniques and methods. Reiki practice does not depend on any form of doctrine or specific beliefs.

No matter what, it will work whether the student believes it or not. However, it is said that the practice of Reiki helps people to keep in touch with their spiritual selves rather than the intellectual concept that it provides. It is more of a feeling experience rather than a “learn it from a text book” experience.

Reiki techniques and practices also aim to develop and promote harmonious living with others. As well as practicing Reiki and its principles, the founder of the Reiki system, Mikao Usui also recommends the practice of simple ethical and moral ideals that can lead to peace and harmony among people of all denominations.

Understanding and getting to know what Reiki is may help people to not only become a healing channel but also to find a way to promote peace among other people.
